Some frequently asked questions...
What equipment will I need? Most people work on a non-slip mat
or a blanket.
If you find it uncomfortable to sit on the floor, particularly with your legs crossed, you may want
to invest in a foam block to sit on. Wear loose, comfortable clothing and have a jumper or fleece to wear at the end of the
session for relaxation so you don't get cold.
What if I have a bad back, old
injury, or medical condition? Hatha Yoga is a very gentle form of exercise. Provided that your doctor has said
it is OK for you to participate, you should have no problems.
You need to make sure that you don't work into
postures which will aggravate your condition but this is discussed at the beginning of your first session. Most people find
that yoga helps their general well- being regardless of how physically fit they are.
How much must I be able to do before I start? I've seen pictures of people with their feet around their heads and
I know I couldn't do it Many people imagine they will have to tie themselves in knots at each class and so
never join. Hatha works on the principle of doing what feels comfortable and nothing more.
What if everyone else is better than me? Yoga is a non- competitive activity! Some days you can climb to
the top of the mountain and some days you can hardly lift your head from the pillow to look out of the window at the mountain!
Everyone is able to different amounts depending on the other things going on in their lives.
As you practice more,
you will find that some postures come easily and some are just not for you. We are all different and we all have different
strengths and abilities. The differences are what make us interesting.
Is yoga
a religion? No, it is philosophy and way of living, which tries to encourage each of us to live in the moment
and be in the moment. There is an ancient Sanskrit poem which encourages us to, "Look to this day as yesterday is only
a memory and tomorrow only a vision," something we in the West have rather lost sight of in recent years.
